A grandes rasgos, podemos afirmar que el coste de extinción y prevención de incendios, sólo en España, asciende aproximadamente a la nada despreciable cifra de 450 millones de euros al año. Por otro lado, la media de superficie quemada al año en España, sin distinguir entre tipos de vegetación, esta en unas 150.000 hectárea. Según estos valores podemos señalar que, desde el punto de vista económico, cada hectárea quemada nos cuesta alrededor de 3.000 euros, haciéndose necesario buscar una solución.

El » bucket» es un depósito de material flexible y plegable, que se utiliza como carga externa. Una vez desplegado se llena mediante inmersión por gravedad en lagos, pantanos, presas, etc. El contenido, entre 500 y 4.500 litros, se descarga de una sola vez en el lugar del incendio provocando los siguientes inconvenientes:
- Gasto del combustible elevado ya que con los helicópteros tienen que desplazarse continuamente para llenar de nuevo el «bucket».
- Peligro para las personas que se encuentran en el lugar de la extinción debido a la fuerza con que se descarga gran cantidad de agua en una sola vez.
- La superficie sobre la que se vierte el agua es muy reducida y no es posible atacar el fuego desde su origen.
- Para los helicópteros supone una configuración de vuelo «sucia», con sus consiguientes riesgos, ya que existe mucho peso muerto colgando a merced de los fenómenos climatológicos y ambientales que desestabilizan la aeronave.

Helicopter buckets are made of flexible and foldable materials used as an external load and, once deployed, are filled by dipping in lakes, reservoirs and dams. The contents, between 500 and 4500 liters are discharged all at once time onto the place of the fire causing the following disadvantages:
- High fuel costs, as the helicopters have to circle continuously to refill the bucket.
- Danger to people that are in the place of extinction due to the force with which a large amount of water is discharged at one time.
- The surface area onto which the water is poured is very small and you cannot attack the fire at its origin.
